Using airplane as media of transportation is very common right now, my friends who work at travel agent tell me his tricks to get cheap air flights :

• Book early, a few cheap tickets available when you book it early. I often use it but use it with caution as no guarantee you can return the tickets for cashback when you face unintended event. New year holiday or vacation often rate to expensive price when you buy it near the date.
• Choose night or morning flight if possible.
• Choose to flight not in weekend, I prefer to use first method.
• Transition flight is cheaper than direct flight, try to ask for more detail with your travel agent.
• Use your credit card, I think that reasonable since I often use lounge and get special discount by showing my credit card. Of course it  depend you credit card issuer.

Watch your issuing ticket time and never ever to play with time of check in. I ever spend a night for late check in and talk with security officer all night before yesterday flight come.
